Ham Radio is not like CB, or the packaged FRS radio(s) sold in stores.
FCC Licensed Radio Operators (Ham Radio or Amateur Radio Operators) pass knowledge tests to earn their license, and spend many hours involved in various community services all across the country.Hurricane Katrina (New Orleans) is an excellent example, though only one of many, each and every season. A "Good Character" is a requirement for obtaining a license (including no criminal background).
Usually, during severe storms, there is no electricity, and therefore, cell phone towers are unable to work. Trees can cut telephone wires as well. Since Ham Radio doesn't depend on electricity (or telephones), Ham Radio Operators are able to continue to exchange information, such as a storm's location and severity, or which areas are most affected, and can stay directly in touch with the offices of the National Weather Service. Many hours of volunteer training are donated by "Hams".
For Pinecrest RV Park Resort, having (licensed) Ham Radio capability adds another layer of safety to the Park, and it's guests. It also allows the Park to stay in touch with RV'ing friends all across the US, on a daily basis. Pinecrest RV Park Resort operates IRLP Node # 4962.
